JOINING A GROUP

People liable to depression often find it helpful to join a local self help group. Then they can meet up with others who have similar problems and offer mutual support to each other by sharing their feelings, ideas and successes.

D-UK was founded by those who had originally formed an association of self help groups (as was Depression Alliance). Unfortunately, we have no local groups within our own organisation at the present time because of the difficulty in finding volunteers willing to run them. Thus, we are now just one large national group, but with the obvious benefits that go with that. Nevertheless, we continue to believe in the value of local groups as an aid to coping with, and recovering from depression, and we urge our members to either form one or join one, if they can.

ENQUIRING ABOUT GROUPS

You might enquire about the possibility of there being a self help group in your area from one of the following:
  • CVS (Council for Voluntary Service/Community and Voluntary Service)
  • Volunteer Bureaux
  • Libraries
  • GPs and Primary Care Trusts
  • Mental Health Units/Centres
  • NHS Direct
  • Internet search engines

Some national charities also have listings of local mental health groups, such as:

Members of D-UK may obtain details of the addresses and phone numbers of the local groups that we know about by consulting our latest newsletter or by writing to or emailing our Central Address. Please notify us if this information needs updating, and if you know of a group that should be included in it.

Any member needing advice about how to form and run a local group should contact D-UK for advice and encouragement in doing that.
